Interceptive Orthodontic Service (Phase 1)
Phase 1 orthodontics, also known as interceptive orthodontics, is the initial stage of orthodontic treatment conducted in children, typically between the ages of 7 and 11. The main objective of this phase is to intercept and correct certain early orthodontic problems before they become more complex and challenging to treat at a later stage.
Here are some key points about Phase 1 orthodontics:
- Initial evaluation: During the first visit to the clinic, the dentist will assess the child's dentition and conduct a comprehensive examination of the mouth to identify potential orthodontic issues. They may also take X-rays and dental impressions to evaluate jaw growth.
- Correction of specific problems: Phase 1 orthodontics aims to address specific issues such as dental malocclusions (poor bite) and jaw growth imbalances. Commonly treated problems include crowded teeth, excessive spacing between teeth, crossbites, thumb-sucking habits, and jaw growth discrepancies.
- Use of orthodontic appliances: Depending on each child's specific needs, different types of orthodontic appliances may be used during Phase 1. These can include removable appliances like activators or fixed appliances such as braces. These appliances help guide tooth and jaw growth, correct tooth positions, and create proper alignment.
- Treatment duration: The duration of Phase 1 orthodontics varies based on the individual needs of each child. Some treatments may last several months or even a few years. Following this initial phase, it may be necessary to proceed to Phase 2, which involves comprehensive orthodontic treatment with braces.
- Regular Follow-up: During Phase 1, the child needs to visit the dentist regularly for adjustments, check-ups, and evaluations of the treatment progress. These visits allow the dentist to monitor the progress, make any necessary modifications, and plan the next step of the treatment.
